Yi-Xian Qin is a SUNY Distinguished Professor and Chair of Biomedical Engineering at Stony Brook University. He serves as Director of the Orthopaedic Bioengineering Research Laboratory and Co-Director of the Institute for Engineering-Driven Medicine. His research focuses on bone adaptation, ultrasound-based diagnostics, and biomaterials for tissue engineering. Qin holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering (Biomechanics) from SUNY Stony Brook (1997).
Education:
- Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering (Biomechanics), SUNY Stony Brook, 1997
Research Interests: Bone Tissue Engineering, Ultrasound Imaging/Therapy, and Cellular Biomechanics. His work integrates biomechanical principles with advanced technologies like therapeutic ultrasound and nanomedicine to address musculoskeletal disorders. Key projects include developing non-invasive scanning systems for bone quality assessment and investigating biodegradable zinc-based implants.
Awards:
- Fellow, ASBMR (American Society for Bone and Mineral Research)
- Fellow, BMES (Biomedical Engineering Society)
- Fellow, AIMBE (American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering)
- Fellow, International Academy of Astronautics
Grants: His research has been funded by NIH, DoD, NASA, and NSBRI, yielding 125+ papers and 20+ book chapters. Current efforts emphasize osteoporosis mitigation, cartilage degeneration prevention, and smart hydrogel development for regenerative applications.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Orthopaedic Bioengineering Lab and collaborates with the Institute for Engineering-Driven Medicine to bridge engineering and clinical practice.
