Christopher Hager is the Hobart Professor of the Humanities and Professor of English at Trinity College, serving since 2007. He specializes in 19th-century American literature, slavery studies, and Civil War history. His research explores intersections of literary production and historical events, with a focus on emancipation narratives and everyday lived experiences during the Civil War era.
Education includes a Ph.D. and M.A. from Northwestern University and an A.B. from Stanford University. His awards include the 2014 Frederick Douglass Prize and Lincoln Prize finalist status for Word by Word, alongside grants from the NEH, ACLS, and APS.
He co-directed Trinity’s Center for Teaching and Learning (2012–2015) and chaired the English Department (2020–2023). Collaborative works include co-editing Timelines of American Literature and the digital anthology Hidden Literacies.
