Michael Vorenberg is an Associate Professor of History and Director of Graduate Advising at Brown University’s Department of History. He specializes in 19th-century U.S. history, focusing on the Civil War, emancipation, legal history, and constitutional theory. He earned his A.B. and Ph.D. from Harvard University, where he received notable prizes, and served as a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard’s W.E.B. Du Bois Institute. Before joining Brown in 1999, he taught at the University of Buffalo.
His research explores topics such as Lincoln’s peace strategies, the abolition of slavery, and constitutional developments. His acclaimed book Final Freedom (2012) influenced the screenplay of Spielberg’s Lincoln and was a Lincoln Prize finalist. His upcoming book Lincoln’s Peace (2025) examines the war’s conclusion. His writings appear in major publications like the New York Times and Washington Post.
