Dr. Christopher Elson is a Professor of French and Canadian Studies and holds the King’s-Dalhousie Carnegie Professorship at the King’s-Dalhousie Joint Faculty of the University of King’s College and Dalhousie University. He specializes in Modern and Contemporary French literature, cinema, poetry, and philosophy. His research explores intersections between aesthetics, ethics, and cultural theory.

Research Interests: Dr. Elson’s work bridges French literature, cinema, and philosophy. He examines themes such as the sublime, deconstruction, and cultural conservatism in Canada. His interdisciplinary focus includes Acadian visual arts, French-Canadian identity in Western Canada, and theories of friendship and place.
Teaching & Mentorship: He has taught courses like FREN 2021 (Nature and Culture), FREN 2801 (Cinema: The French Phenomenon II), and CANA 2000 (The Idea of Canada). Recently supervised research topics include Marguerite Yourcenar’s novels, Claire Denis’s cinema, and Derrida’s theories of the gift.
Labs/Teams: Active in the King’s-Dalhousie Joint Faculty, contributing to interdisciplinary programs in French studies and Canadian cultural analysis.
