Christopher Dede is a Senior Research Fellow at Harvard University's Graduate School of Education (HGSE) and a co-Principal Investigator of the NSF-funded National Artificial Intelligence Institute for Adult Learning and Online Education. Previously, he held the Timothy E. Wirth Professorship in Learning Technologies at HGSE for 22 years. His research focuses on emerging technologies for learning, educational policy, and leadership in scaling innovations. He co-founded the Silver Lining for Learning initiative and developed a widely used framework for scaling educational improvements.
Education: Ed.D., University of Massachusetts, Amherst (1972); B.S. in Chemistry and English, California Institute of Technology (1969).
Research interests include AI in education, immersive technologies (VR/AR/MR), online learning systems, and policy for educational technology. He advises organizations like Mursion, Inc., and has authored/co-edited numerous books, including The 60-Year Curriculum and Learning Engineering for Online Education.
Awards include recognition as a top edtech innovator (2017), the AERA Outstanding Contributions to Research in Immersive Learning Award (2017), and Fellow of the American Educational Research Association (2011). He has served on editorial boards for leading journals and national committees, including the U.S. Department of Education's Expert Panel on Technology.
Current projects include leading the AI Institute for Adult Learning and Online Education, focusing on AI-enhanced learning tools and virtual environments. His work emphasizes intelligence augmentation (IA) to complement human capabilities, particularly in workforce development and adult education.
