Christopher Brian Watkins is a Professor at Cornell University’s School of Integrative Plant Science, specializing in the Horticulture Section. His research and extension programs focus on postharvest science, particularly apple storage life and quality, and controlled atmosphere storage techniques. He collaborates with statewide agricultural stakeholders to advance harvest maturity management and storage technology.
- Doctorate in Food Science from Rutgers University (1985)
- Master’s and Bachelor’s in Horticulture from the University of Auckland (1978, 1976)
His research explores the physiological and biochemical responses of apples to storage conditions, including temperature, atmosphere, and ethylene inhibitors like 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP). Current projects address disorders such as internal browning, carbon dioxide injury, and superficial scald, integrating both basic and applied approaches.
Recent publications highlight his work on non-destructive testing methods for apple quality, preharvest chemical treatments, and sustainable postharvest practices, spanning disciplines like Horticulture, Food Chemistry, and Plant Physiology. His extension efforts emphasize collaboration with regional specialists and storage operators to optimize postharvest protocols.
- Scientific Awards: Inducted into Alpha Zeta (2019), CALS Alumni Outstanding Faculty Award (2018), B.Y. Morrison Lecture invitee (2016), Fellow of the American Society for Horticultural Science (2015), Herman M. Cohn Professor of Horticulture (2013)
Watkins contributes to graduate education through guest lectures in courses such as Advanced Postharvest Biology and Thesis Research. He is involved in the Fruit and Soil Health Program Work Teams, Cornell AgriTech, and Cornell Cooperative Extension initiatives, addressing statewide agricultural challenges.
