Christopher Bret Ranalli is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, affiliated with the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities and the Department of Epistemology and Metaphysics. His research focuses on epistemology, including social and applied epistemology, the ethics of belief, and their intersections with philosophy of mind, ethics, and metaphysics. He organizes the department’s Theoretical Philosophy Research Group and serves on the OZW committee for Theoretical Philosophy. He is part of the ERC-funded Extreme Beliefs project and the DFG Thinking about Suspension network. His work includes influential publications like Is Radical Doubt Morally Wrong? and What’s so bad about Echo Chambers?. Ranalli teaches courses such as Knowledge in a Social World and Epistemology, and co-supervises PhD students in epistemology and related fields.
Education: PhD in Philosophy from the University of Edinburgh. He has held positions at the University of Cologne (supported by an Alexander von Humboldt grant) and the Instituto de Investigaciones Filosóficas at UNAM. His public philosophy essays include Erasing Consciousness and 'Indoctrination' as Propaganda. Current projects include a book on skepticism’s ethical dimensions and contributions to research on democratic knowledge and epistemic suspension.
Grants and Projects: Principal Investigator of the Startersbeurs grant (2024–2029), contributing researcher to the ERC Extreme Beliefs (2020–2024) and Knowledgeable Democracy project (2016–2023). He is a board member of the Dutch Research School of Philosophy (OZSW) and actively participates in international conferences and lectures.
