Matthew McGrath is a Professor of Philosophy and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Philosophy at Washington University in St. Louis. He holds a PhD from Brown University. His research focuses on epistemology, metaphysics, and philosophy of perception, particularly exploring intersections between epistemic concepts (knowledge, rational belief) and practical notions (action, intention). McGrath co-authored Knowledge in an Uncertain World (Oxford 2009) and Epistemology: A Contemporary Introduction (Oxford 2014). His work addresses topics like epistemic duties, pragmatic encroachment, and perceptual justification.

Research interests emphasize how appearances provide knowledge of reality, debates over epistemic norms for judgment suspension, and challenges to phenomenal conservatism. Recent work examines agency limitations in judgment formation and the structure of epistemic defeat.
