Dr. Christopher Barnett is an Associate Lecturer in the School of Chemistry at the University of Sydney, affiliated with The Net Zero Institute and The University of Sydney Nano Institute. He holds a PhD from the University of New South Wales (UNSW), where he focused on tuning N-Heterocyclic Carbenes (NHCs) for organocatalysis. His industry experience includes a role as Validation Chemist, automating data collection and implementing flow systems for chemical processing. He transitioned to academia in 2019, first under Prof. Anthony Masters and currently collaborating with Prof. Thomas Maschmeyer in the Laboratory of Advanced Catalysis for Sustainability, specializing in electrocatalysis and reactor design.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry (UNSW)
- PhD in Chemistry (UNSW)
Research interests center on NHCs’ electronic properties, their applications in catalysis, and sustainable chemical engineering. His work bridges fundamental chemistry with industrial challenges, such as reactor optimization and green chemistry.
His publications (2021–2022) emphasize structural-electronic correlations in NHCs and methodological advancements in spectroscopic analysis. No scientific awards are listed. He contributes to academic governance through roles like the Researcher Liaison Committee and advocates for men’s health via Movember. His lab focuses on electrocatalytic systems and sustainable reactor design.
