Christopher Aaron Barney serves as an Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of Art + Design at Northeastern University, where he directs the Studio Lab for Games@Northeastern. He teaches diverse courses across GAME and GSND programs including Level Design and Game Architecture, Foundations of Game Design, and Exploratory Game Design, emphasizing practical application through Game Design Patterns.
His educational background includes a BA in Design and Implementation of Virtual Worlds from Marlboro College and an MS in Conversational Artificial Intelligence in Massively Multiuser Environments.
Professor Barney's research centers on Game Design Patterns as a unifying framework, extending into specialized domains including Level Design, Interactive Narrative techniques, Generative Design methodologies, and Diversity in Games analysis. His work bridges academic theory with industry practice through Paper Prototyping and examines societal impacts of gaming culture.
With extensive industry experience spanning six years as Game Designer and Software Engineer for Pearson's Poptropica and lead designer for FunBrain, he brings practical expertise to classroom instruction. His independent game projects include Fall of the Last City and Play Me A Story, complemented by scriptwriting work in New England interactive theater.
He actively contributes to the game development community through presentations at major conferences including GDC, GDC EU, Pax West, and GaymerX, and was featured in June 2023 discussing design innovations in the Legend of Zelda franchise.
As Studio Lab Director for Games@Northeastern, he oversees facilities supporting student game development projects and fosters connections between academic programs and industry professionals through the Game Makers Guild and International Game Developers Association.
