Prof. Christoph Mayer is an Associate Professor at the University of Tübingen’s Faculty of Science, affiliated with the Interfaculty Institute of Microbiology and Infection Medicine (IMIT). He leads the research group AG Mayer, focusing on bacterial cell wall metabolism and enzymology. His academic journey includes a PhD from the University of Zürich, postdoc work at the University of British Columbia, and prior roles at the University of Konstanz. He is a recipient of the DFG Heisenberg Fellowship (W2).
Education: Studied Chemistry and Microbiology at Albert Ludwigs University (Freiburg) and University of Zürich. Completed his Habilitation in 2009 (Venia Legendi in Microbiology and Biochemistry).
Research: Investigates bacterial cell wall dynamics, peptidoglycan recycling, and antibiotic mechanisms. Current projects include studying cell wall metabolism in pathogens like Tannerella forsythia, enzymatic degradation pathways, and antibiotic resistance. Key interests span carbohydrate-acting enzymes and molecular mechanisms of bacterial survival strategies.
Teaching & Leadership: Teaches the Master Block Module “Microbial Glycobiology” and supervises PhD students (e.g., Martina Bianchi, Yannis Stahl). Former students include 13 doctoral graduates since 2008. Active in editorial roles for journals like Microbial Physiology and PNAS.
Grants & Funding: Supported by DFG, SFB TRR 261, and CMFI Cluster of Excellence. Research emphasizes translational applications in antibiotic development and bacterial pathogenesis.
Labs & Teams: Hosts a lab focused on bacterial cell wall enzymology, with collaborations on structural biology and synthetic enzyme engineering. Former group members have contributed to over 75 publications since 2000.
