Dr. Christoph Laucht is an Associate Professor of History at Swansea University's School of Culture and Communication, where he has been teaching since 2013. Previously, he held positions at the Universities of Liverpool and Leeds. His academic journey began with undergraduate studies at the Universities of Kiel (Germany) and Arizona (USA), followed by an MA from the University of New Mexico (2005) and a doctorate from the University of Liverpool (2009).
Laucht specializes in Western European history, particularly focusing on Britain, Germany, and the United States after 1945. His research spans multiple interconnected fields including Cold War history, nuclear history, transnational history, and the cultural and social dimensions of peace and conflict. He is particularly known for his work on British nuclear culture, German-British relations, and the intersection of film, television, and historical memory. His methodological approach emphasizes transnational and comparative perspectives that transcend national boundaries.
His scholarly output demonstrates remarkable consistency and depth in exploring how societies have processed the nuclear threat, engaged in reconciliation processes, and represented historical events through media. His publications reveal a strong focus on how different societal actors - from state institutions to medical professionals and media outlets - have navigated uncertainties surrounding nuclear threats and peace initiatives during the Cold War era. His most recent work has expanded into urban history, examining town twinning as a mechanism for post-WWII reconciliation between European cities.
Among his notable achievements is his first book, 'Elemental Germans: Klaus Fuchs, Rudolf Peierls and the Making of British Nuclear Culture, 1939-59' (Palgrave Macmillan, 2012), which established his reputation in nuclear history. He is currently completing his second book, 'Playing with Uncertainty: Britain and the Nuclear Threat in the Second Cold War, 1979-85' (under contract with Oxford University Press), which examines how various societal elements dealt with nuclear uncertainty during heightened Cold War tensions.
Laucht actively supervises doctoral and master's students on diverse topics related to nuclear history, Cold War studies, and European reconciliation processes. His public engagement includes media appearances with BBC, Austrian national radio (ORF), and German news agency Regiocast, where he provides historical context for contemporary issues including Brexit and European relations.
