Christoph Brumann is a Research Fellow and Head of Research Group at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History (Department of Anthropology of Economic Experimentation). He holds an honorary professorship at the University of Halle-Wittenberg and is a member of the Academia Europaea. His research focuses on urban anthropology, cultural heritage politics, international organizations, and the anthropology of Buddhism. Brumann earned his doctorate (1997) and habilitation (2005) from the University of Cologne, and has held visiting professorships at Düsseldorf, Cologne, and Tübingen Universities. He is known for his work on Kyoto's urban heritage conflicts, UNESCO World Heritage dynamics, and utopian communities in Japan.
