Christine Myrvang is a Professor in the Department of Communication and Culture at BI Norwegian Business School, where she has worked since 2009 (first as Senior Researcher at the Centre for Business History from 2009-2020, then as Professor since 2020). Prior to BI, she worked as a researcher at the University of Oslo's Centre for Technology, Innovation and Culture from 1996 to 2008. She holds a Dr. Philos. (Ph.D.) from the University of Oslo (2005), a Cand. Philol. (Master's) from 1995, and a Bachelor's degree from 1991, all from the University of Oslo.
Myrvang specializes in business history from the late 18th century to the present, with particular focus on the history of modern consumer culture. Her research spans industry and manufacturing, knowledge systems, technology and expertise, retail and insurance sectors, consumption patterns, sales and advertising practices, and media industry evolution. She has made significant contributions to cultural history, most notably with her recent work on Sigrid Undset—the office worker who became a Nobel Prize-winning author in 1928. Currently, she is writing a comprehensive book tracing the history of the modern office over the past two centuries, from traditional workspaces to today's open-plan and digital office environments.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a consistent focus on how historical contexts shape contemporary workplace dynamics, consumer behavior, and cultural practices. Her work demonstrates particular expertise in office history, gender studies within historical contexts, and the evolution of consumer culture. She frequently examines how technological changes impact social structures, with special attention to how marginalized groups navigate historical workplace transformations. Her research methodology often involves innovative approaches to historical evidence, particularly in giving voice to "silent sources" and overlooked historical narratives.
Myrvang is an active contributor to public discourse through media appearances, having published numerous popular scientific articles in outlets like Aftenposten Historie, Morgenbladet, and Dagbladet, as well as participating in radio programs on NRK. Her BI Business Review articles, including "How the office estranged and empowered queer women" and "Art Deco: The era that lingers in spirit," demonstrate her ability to translate complex historical research for broader audiences.
Her academic contributions span decades of rigorous scholarship, with publications covering diverse historical periods and themes while maintaining a consistent focus on the intersection of business practices, cultural development, and social change. Her work on the history of consumer culture, particularly regarding women's experiences and gender dynamics in historical contexts, represents a significant contribution to multiple academic fields.
