Christine Mummery is a Professor of Developmental Biology at the Department of Anatomy and Embryology, Leiden University Medical Centre (2008–present), previously holding the same position at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Utrecht (2002–2008). She has held visiting roles such as Radcliffe Fellow at Harvard Stem Cell Institute (2007) and guest professor at TU Twente (2015).
- Education:
- PhD in Biophysics (1974–1978), University of London, UK
- BSc (Honours) in Physics, Electronics, Mathematics (1971–1974), University of Nottingham, UK
Research interests focus on cardiovascular development, pluripotent stem cell differentiation into cardiovascular cells, and clinical applications such as disease modeling and drug discovery for conditions like hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT). Her work combines developmental biology, biophysics, and clinical collaboration to study TGFß signaling mechanisms and engineer synthetic vascular/myocardial tissues.
Scientific Awards & Honors include:
- Hans Bloemendaal Medal (2014)
- Hugo van de Poelgeest Prize (2014)
- ERC Advanced Grant (2012)
- Leadership roles in the Royal Netherlands Academy of Science and international stem cell societies
- Radcliffe Institute Fellowship (2007)
Advising & Collaborations involve clinical partnerships with cardiologists in Leiden/Amsterdam and engineering collaborations with Technical Universities of Twente and Delft, focusing on microfluidic devices and 'organ-on-chip' models for cardiovascular research.
