Christine M. Drea is a Professor at Duke University with appointments in the Department of Evolutionary Anthropology, Department of Biology, University Program in Ecology, and Duke Institute for Brain Sciences. Her research focuses on sexual differentiation, social behavior, and microbiome dynamics in female-dominant species like hyenas, lemurs, and meerkats.
- Education:
- Ph.D., Emory University (1991)
- M.A., Emory University (1990)
- B.S., University of Maryland, College Park (1984)
Her work integrates field and laboratory approaches to study neuro-endocrinology, gut microbiome diversity, and olfactory communication mechanisms. Current projects examine:
- Comparative neuroendocrinology in lemurs
- Microbiome health in captive vs wild lemurs
- Female dominance hormonal mediation
- Chemical signaling evolution
- Antibiotic resistance impacts
Key grants include multiple NSF awards for lemur microbiome research and reproductive studies. She leads the Drea Lab, which conducts fieldwork in Madagascar, Gabon, and South Africa, while mentoring PhD and UPE students.
