Christine Kenney is the inaugural Professor of Disaster Risk Reduction at Massey University and Co-Director of Research in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. She leads Te Toi Whakaruruhau o Aotearoa, the national Māori Disaster Risk Reduction Research Centre funded by Toka Tū Ake New Zealand Natural Hazards Commission. Her work integrates disaster sociology, health, and Indigenous knowledge systems to enhance community resilience globally.

Research Focus: Cultural factors in disaster resilience, Indigenous disaster risk management practices, and collaborative governance approaches. She specializes in community-centered research with Māori communities and global partnerships in Canada, China, Australia, and New Zealand.

Grants and Collaborations: Multiple government grants, Marsden Fund projects, and CoREs. Leads the NSC Resilience to Nature’s Challenges programme’s rural research and Mātauranga Māori-informed disaster recovery research.
