Christine Howlett is a Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at Vassar College, holding the George Sherman Dickinson Chair. She leads the Vassar College Women’s Chorus, Choir, and teaches music theory and voice. Her choirs have performed internationally, including at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall, with tours in Cuba, Europe, and Uganda. She has served as Chair of the Music Department (2016–2020 and 2021–present) and chairs committees under the Dean of Studies office. Her scholarly work includes editing Francesco Gasparini’s Mass for Five Voices (A-R Editions, 2019).
As Artistic Director of Cappella Festiva, she revitalizes choral music in the Hudson Valley. She previously served as Past-President of the New York American Choral Directors Association. Her advocacy for contemporary music includes commissions from composers like Libby Larsen and Tarik O’Regan. Howlett earned a BA in Vocal Performance from the University of Toronto, an MA and DMA in Early Music Voice Performance and Choral Conducting from Indiana University. She has been at Vassar since 2003.
