Christin Marie Taylor is the Department Chair and Associate Professor of English at Shenandoah University. Taylor holds a B.A. and M.A. from the University of Virginia and a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland.
Her research focuses on African American literature and culture, Contemporary American literature, and Southern Studies. Notable works include Labor Pains: New Deal Fictions of Race, Work, and Sex in the South (2019), which won the 2019 Welty Prize. Her scholarship explores intersections of race, gender, and labor, with recent publications analyzing eco-racial dynamics in Willa Cather’s Sapphira and the Slave Girl, queer identity in New Orleans bounce music, and Black women’s labor narratives in Southern literature.
In addition to academic writing, Taylor contributes to creative nonfiction, such as “The Elements of Style: Lessons in Gender and Race” (2021). She emphasizes pedagogical approaches that empower students through dialogic learning, inspired by Paulo Freire’s educational philosophy. Her personal interests include Southern culture and advocacy for animals.
