Christian de Pee is a Professor in the Department of History at the University of Michigan. He holds affiliations with the Center for Chinese Studies and the Center for Japanese Studies.
Education:
- PhD in East Asian Languages and Cultures from Columbia University (1997)
- MA in Chinese Languages and Cultures from Leiden University (1991)
His research focuses on medieval and early modern China (Tang, Song, and Yuan dynasties), examining topics such as urban space, imperial power representations, ritual practices, and the role of text and writing in shaping cultural and intellectual history. He explores archaeological evidence and historical discourses to analyze these themes.
Recent publications highlight his work on financial metaphors in Song dynasty debates, the evolution of knowledge boundaries through biji (notebooks), and urban planning as reflected in Southern Song literary depictions of imperial capitals. His scholarship bridges historical analysis with interdisciplinary approaches to cultural and intellectual studies.
