Christian Thuselt, PhD is an Associate Scientist at the Institute of Political Science, Chair of Middle Eastern Politics and Society at Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU). He has been associated with this academic chair since 2025 and maintains an active research profile in Middle Eastern political systems.
His research focuses on:
- Political party structures in Lebanon
- Encounters with modernity in Middle Eastern political organizations
- Intellectual history of Middle Eastern politics
- Christian political movements in Lebanon
Dr. Thuselt's scholarly work challenges conventional Western perspectives that characterize Middle Eastern political parties as antiquated or non-modern. His research demonstrates how Lebanese political parties, particularly Christian parties, engage meaningfully with concepts of the individual, nation-state, secularity, and political representation while maintaining distinctive cultural frameworks. He employs interdisciplinary methodologies combining historical analysis with anthropological approaches to political phenomena.
His major publication examines how Lebanese political parties conceptualize modernity despite operating within what Western observers might consider traditional frameworks. The research argues that these parties take the nation-state as their central reference point and utilize modern political concepts as resources for their ideological frameworks.
Dr. Thuselt received his doctorate from Roskilde University in 2018 under Sune Haugbolle. His academic career includes positions as lecturer and research assistant at FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg (2009-2021), research associate at Orient-Institut Beirut (2021-2025), and his current role at the Chair of Middle Eastern Politics and Society since 2025.
