Christian SCHULZ is a Full Professor of European Sustainable Spatial Development and Analysis at the University of Luxembourg, serving as Head of the Department of Geography and Spatial Planning. He specializes in socio-ecological transitions, sustainability transitions, and post-growth geographies. His research integrates environmental justice, circular economy, and regional development, with a focus on sufficiency-oriented practices and policy frameworks.
Education: Studied geography in Saarbrücken (Germany), Québec (Canada), and Metz (France). Earned a PhD in 1997 (Saarland University) and completed his habilitation thesis in 2004 on environmental producer services and knowledge transfer in manufacturing. Prior roles include professorships at Saarland University, University of Metz, University of Cologne, and others.
Teaching: Leads courses in the Master in Geography and Spatial Planning (MAGEO), Formation Continue en Aménagement du Territoire (FCAT), and the Doctoral School in Humanities and Social Sciences (DSHSS). Research contributions include co-editing an Open-Access anthology on post-growth geographies and co-authoring a textbook on economic geographies of sustainability (in German).
Visiting Positions: Held roles at Simon Fraser University (Canada), Sun Yat-sen University (China), Worcester Polytechnic Institute (USA), and the University of Hull (UK). Active in the Academy for Territorial Development (ARL) within the Leibniz Association.
Publications: Over 50 peer-reviewed articles and books, emphasizing sustainability transitions, alternative economies, and regional governance. Recent works include studies on green finance, post-growth policy, and spatial practices of well-being alternatives.
