Christian Richter Østergaard is a Professor of Innovation and Regional Industrial Dynamics at Aalborg University Business School, part of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. He leads the IKE Research Group (ike.aau.dk) and is a core member of the DRUID Academy. His research focuses on innovation dynamics, regional industrial resilience, green transitions, and workplace diversity impacts. Østergaard holds an M.Sc. (2001) and Ph.D. (2005) from Aalborg University.
Key research areas include sustainability transitions in Nordic regions, university-industry collaboration, and CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage) workforce analysis. He has led major EU and Danish projects like CO2 Vision (2022-2023), GONST (2017-2021), and the DIRECTLY logistics initiative. His work spans over 110 publications in journals such as Research Policy and Regional Studies, with frequent media engagements on innovation policy and green economy challenges.
Notable achievements include the 2023 Module Distinction award and serving as expert reviewer for NSF, EU Commission, and research councils across multiple countries. His academic service roles include PhD program leadership and faculty council memberships. Current initiatives include the GreenTraC policy center and the Port of Aalborg green transition project.
