Christian M.I.M. Matthiessen is a Professor under the María Zambrano scheme at Complutense University, with affiliations including Honorary Professorships at Beijing Normal University and the Australian National University, and Guest Professorship at the University of Science and Technology in Beijing. He has held positions at esteemed institutions such as the USC Information Sciences Institute, Sydney University, Macquarie University, and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, alongside visiting appointments at the University of Hamburg and RIKEN Institute in Tokyo.
His research spans over four decades, rooted in Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), focusing on discourse analysis, corpus studies, registerial cartography, Rhetorical Structure Theory, and applications of SFL to medical discourse, education, and computational linguistics. He has co-developed foundational SFL frameworks, including the Nigel grammar of English during the Penman project, and contributed to theories of lexicogrammar, cognitive systems, and neurosemiotics.
Matthiessen’s publications include over 150 book chapters and journal articles, with notable works on SFL theory, functional grammar, and discourse analysis. His recent projects address longitudinal studies in second-language education, healthcare communication, and the semiotic underpinnings of language in social and biological contexts. He actively promotes interdisciplinary dialogue, advocating for linguistics in fields like geopolitics, culturomics, and neuroscience.
