Christian Keathley is the Walter J. Cerf Distinguished Professor of Film & Media Culture at Middlebury College since 2002. He holds a PhD in Film Studies from the University of Iowa, an MFA in Filmmaking from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and degrees in English and Film Studies from the University of Florida.
His research focuses on cinephilia, videographic criticism, and film history. He co-authored The Videographic Essay: Criticism in Sound & Image (2016) and co-edits [in]TRANSITION, a journal honored with the 2015 Anne Friedberg Award. With Jason Mittell, he co-led NEH-funded workshops on videographic criticism, earning the 2020 Innovative Pedagogy Award.
Recent projects include a videographic essay on director William Keighley and co-authoring a BFI Film Classics volume on All the President’s Men. He teaches courses on global film history, cinema theory, and authorship studies.
