Christian Hulteberg holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering and a Master of Business Administration, which he leverages to assess the economic viability of sustainable technologies. His interdisciplinary background enables him to design and evaluate complete production systems, combining technical process design with cost and investment analysis.
- Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering
- Master of Business Administration
His research interests are centered on enabling the transition to renewable feedstocks through innovative process technologies. Key areas include heterogeneous catalysis, lignin valorization, gas cleaning, and process design for biorefineries. He investigates both catalytic and non-catalytic pathways to produce high-value chemicals from biomass, with a strong emphasis on economic and regulatory factors influencing technology adoption.
The 15 most recent publications reveal a consistent focus on lignin depolymerization, continuous flow reactors, catalyst development, and membrane separation technologies. These works reflect a trajectory toward integrated biorefinery systems, where waste streams like kraft black liquor are converted into valuable aromatics and fuels. The research combines experimental work with modeling and optimization techniques, indicating a holistic approach to sustainable process engineering.
Christian Hulteberg has received recognition through leadership roles rather than formal awards listed in the text. He serves as:
- Board Chairman of the Swedish Catalysis Society
- Swedish Representative in the Nordic Catalysis Society
- Swedish Representative in the European Federation of Catalyst Associations
- Expert Advisor to the European Commission, Research Council of Norway, and International Energy Agency
He has supervised 8 research students and has been a supervisor or co-researcher in multiple large-scale projects, including four major initiatives funded by Mistra. His entrepreneurial spirit is evident in the founding of several companies based on his inventions, collectively employing around 30 people. This blend of academic rigor and industrial application underscores his impact on both research and real-world sustainability transitions.
Christian Hulteberg co-manages the Particle Analysis Center, a research infrastructure within the Division of Chemical Engineering, indicating his involvement in shared laboratory resources and analytical capabilities. His collaborative network spans across Europe and involves interdisciplinary teams working on sustainable materials, energy systems, and circular economy solutions.
