Prof. Christian Hommel is a Professor of Oboe at the University of the Arts Bremen, specializing in historical performance practice and 20th-century music. He is renowned for his collaborations with ensembles like the Camerata Salzburg, Ensemble Modern, and the Cologne Chamber Orchestra, particularly for recording Bach's complete oboe concertos. A co-founder and conductor of Ensemble Aventure, he champions contemporary music and has premiered works like Heinz Holliger's Kardiophonie.
Education: Studied oboe under Heinz Holliger and piano with James Avery at Freiburg University. Prize-winning performer at international competitions in Geneva and Trieste, recipient of numerous scholarships and accolades including the German Music Council Prize (1987) and Mozart Society Prize (1988).
Research and performance focus on reviving Baroque repertoire, modern classical compositions, and live electronic music. Regularly teaches at international masterclasses, such as the European Academy in Montepulciano. Over 30 recorded CDs, several honored with the German Record Critics' Prize.
Advising and grants include mentoring students like Changhao Yang and leading orchestral studies programs. Active in academic and public performances, exemplified by recent concerts at the University of the Arts Bremen's Fête de la Musique 2025 and studio recitals with his class.
