Christian D. Kummerow is a Professor in the Department of Atmospheric Science at Colorado State University (CSU), part of the Walter Scott, Jr. College of Engineering. He joined CSU in 2000 after serving as Project Scientist for NASA's Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) at the Goddard Space Flight Center. His research focuses on remote sensing, global hydrology, and climate change, supported by NASA and NOAA.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Atmospheric Physics, University of Minnesota (1987)
- B.S. in Physics, University of California, Berkeley (1982)
Research & Leadership:
- Member of the TRMM Steering Team and AMSR team
- Directed the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA) from 2010–2021
- Co-Chaired the National Academy of Sciences' Committee on NASA's Earth Venture Class (2020–2022)
- Recipient of the Abell Outstanding Faculty Research Award (2014) and NASA's Robert Goddard Award (2014)
Teaching: Specializes in radiative transfer, satellite meteorology, and remote sensing techniques.
Grants & Collaborations: Active in defining space missions for Earth science, including contributions to the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission.
