Christian Borch is a Professor of Sociology at the Department of Sociology, University of Copenhagen. He holds a dr.scient.soc. and PhD in Sociology. His academic journey includes roles as a professor at Copenhagen Business School and positions in various research leadership roles.
Education: PhD (2004), MSc (2001), and BA (1998) in Political Science from Aarhus University. He has also held postdoctoral positions and visiting scholarships at institutions like New York University and Goldsmiths, University of London.
Research Interests: Borch focuses on the sociology of finance (automated trading), machine learning, urban sociology, and social theory. His work bridges classical theories (Tarde, Luhmann) with contemporary issues like algorithmic finance and postcolonial critique. Notable projects include ERC-funded research on algorithmic finance and a forthcoming book on machine learning's societal impact.
Awards: Carlsberg Monograph Fellowship (2022), Villum Synergy Grant (2021), ERC Consolidator Grant (2016), and the ASA Best Book in Sociological Theory (2014).
Grants and Leadership: He has secured major grants from the European Research Council, Villum Foundation, and Danish Councils. Currently serves as Deputy Head of Department for Research and on multiple university committees.
