Prof. Dr. Christfried Böttrich has held the Chair of New Testament at the University of Greifswald's Faculty of Theology since October 2003. Born in 1959 in Marienberg, he trained as a goldsmith before studying theology in Leipzig, earning his doctorate (1990) and habilitation (1995). He previously held acting professorships in Frankfurt, Leipzig, Marburg, and Jena.
His research specializes in three core areas:
- Luke studies: Theology of Luke-Acts, exegesis of the Gospel of Luke, and Jewish-Hellenistic contextual analysis
- Early Jewish writings: Corpus Judaeo-Hellenisticum research, Slavic apocrypha traditions (Adam, Enoch, Melchizedek, Jacob)
- Pauline studies: Social-historical analysis of Pauline communities and conflict dynamics
He directs multiple projects including the Mayer Teaching Synagogue reconstruction, Theological Commentary on the New Testament, and biblical travel guides. As faculty coordinator for the Studying in Israel program, he enables student exchanges at Hebrew University Jerusalem.
