Christa Sys

Christa Sys is a Professor at the University of Antwerp, holding the BNP Paribas Fortis Chair on Transport, Logistics and Ports within the Department of Transport and Regional Economics. She is affiliated with both the Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Antwerp and Antwerp Management School (AMS), where she teaches in the Master in Maritime and Air Transport Management program. Until October 2013, she served as the Scientific Director of the Research Centre on Freight and Passengers Flows. Her roles also included Course Coordinator for Business Environment, Maritime Economics & Business, and Maritime Supply Chain at the Centre for Maritime and Air Transport Management (C-MAT) until 2021.

Christa Sys earned her doctorate in Applied Economics from Ghent University and the University of Antwerp (December 2010). Her doctoral research focused on the competitive conditions, concentration, and market structure of the container liner shipping industry, which garnered the prestigious Fernand Suykens Prize for Port Studies.

Her research interests center on maritime economics, transport economics, and cooperation and competition dynamics in shipping. She also emphasizes operational aspects of maritime transport and inland transportation systems. Her work bridges theoretical frameworks with practical industry challenges, particularly in logistics and port management.
