Chris Urwin is a Research Fellow at Monash University's Indigenous Studies Centre and a Smithsonian Associate. His archaeological research collaborates with Indigenous communities in Australia and Papua New Guinea, focusing on Indigenous voyaging, cross-cultural exchange, and place-making. He holds a PhD (2019) from Monash University and was Peter Buck Postdoctoral Fellow at the Smithsonian (2021-2022).
His research interests include Indigenous archaeology, social memory, Bayesian chronological modeling, and Pacific canoe collections. His award-winning book Building and Remembering (2022) examines place-making in Papua New Guinea.
Key awards include the John Mulvaney Book Award (2023) and Peter Buck Postdoctoral Fellowship (2020). His publications frequently integrate oral traditions with archaeological evidence to reconstruct historical narratives.
As Book Reviews Editor for Australian Archaeology and Webmaster for the Australian Archaeological Association, he actively supports disciplinary communication.
