Chris Pawson is a Professor in Anthrozoology at Hartpury University's Department of Animal and Agriculture. He holds a PhD and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). Previously, he served as Associate Head of Department at the University of the West of England (2014–2022) and held leadership roles in learning and teaching at the University of East London (2010–2014).
Chris holds a PhD, MSc, Postgraduate Diploma, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCHE).
His research focuses on animal cognition and welfare, psychological health of animal care professionals, and human-animal interactions. He explores topics such as zoo animal behavior, farm animal well-being, and the psychosocial benefits of equine interventions for at-risk youth. Recent projects include investigating wildlife value orientations in safari tourism and mental health challenges in dairy farming communities.

Chris supervises numerous PhD/MPhil students and leads projects like the Deciding to Euthanise study. He collaborates with institutions and experts globally, including Prof Vicky Melfi on zoo welfare and wildlife conservation. His work integrates interdisciplinary approaches to address complex human-animal interaction challenges.
He is actively involved in academic networks, organizing conferences such as the International Society of Anthrozoology Conference 2024.
