Dr Chris Pawson is an Associate Professor in Psychology at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol), affiliated with the Faculty of Health and Applied Sciences (HAS). He has held leadership roles including Head of Psychology and Associate Head of Department for Health and Social Sciences since joining UWE in 2014. His career spans roles at Birkbeck and the University of East London, where he served as Principal Lecturer and Director of Psychology Learning and Teaching. He holds a PhD from the Institute for Research in Child Development, alongside postgraduate qualifications in teaching (PGCHE), clinical and community psychology, and a MSc in Primate Conservation from Hartpury University.
His research focuses on applying community psychological frameworks to mental health and wellbeing, particularly addressing multiple exclusion homelessness in Bristol. His work also extends to anthrozoology, examining animal behavior, cognition, and human-animal interaction. He actively serves on the Lundy Field Society committee and the Board of Trustees for Secret World Wildlife Rescue, reflecting his conservation ecology interests.
Dr Pawson has received numerous accolades, including multiple UWE Outstanding Teaching Awards (2023, 2021, 2019, 2018, 2017), Inspirational Leadership Awards (2020, 2015), and the 2017 Manager of the Year. His teaching and research mentorship spans undergraduate and doctoral students across psychology, animal behavior, and conservation domains.
He collaborates with organizations like the Somerset Community Foundation, Office for National Statistics, Avon Wildlife Trust, and Second Step Housing Association. His research portfolio includes over 50 publications addressing topics from childhood racism experiences to wildlife rehabilitation trends, trauma-informed practices, and systems change in complex needs management.
