Chris Patel is Professor of Accounting in the Department of Accounting and Corporate Governance at Macquarie University's Faculty of Business and Economics. He established the International Accounting and Business Network comprising 16 Macquarie staff and 20 international scholars from China, India, Indonesia, Japan, and Germany, enhancing the university's global research profile through interdisciplinary work across 144 countries adopting international accounting standards.
His research program focuses on improving accounting quality, auditing, sustainability, and governance in emerging economies using theoretical, methodological, and empirical approaches. He has published five research monographs and extensive work in A* and FT50 journals, with 97 research outputs totaling 2677 citations (h-index 26). His work bridges academia and policy, supporting Sustainable Development Goals through governance reforms and capacity building in developing nations.
Recent publications reveal strong trends in cross-cultural auditing ethics, political economy impacts on environmental protection, and religious influences on investment behavior. His collaborative work with scholars from 144 countries demonstrates methodological innovation in international accounting research, particularly through large-scale comparative studies of regulatory enforcement and business model adaptation.

He mentors scholars from Germany, Italy, Denmark, China, India, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka through structured research capacity-building programs.
He leads the International Accounting and Business Network conducting biannual research workshops that have trained over 600 scholars from emerging economies in theoretical frameworks and methodological approaches. This network facilitates joint publications with institutions across Asia-Pacific and Europe, with recent collaborations focusing on IFRS implementation challenges and sustainability reporting standards in developing economies.
