Chris Neu is a Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Virginia, where he also serves as Director of Graduate Studies.
- Ph.D., 2003, Ohio State University
His research focuses on experimental high energy physics, particularly the characterization of the Higgs boson and searches for new fundamental particles through the CMS experiment at CERN's LHC. Key areas include:
- Higgs boson-top quark interactions
- Time-of-arrival particle detection (MTD subsystem)
- Dark matter and new physics beyond the Standard Model
- Top quark production cross-section measurements
Recent publications highlight CMS experiment results from 2010-2020, emphasizing Higgs boson studies and detector upgrades for the HL-LHC era (2028). Technical awards include:
- 2020 Fermilab LHC Physics Center Guest Program
- 2016 Learning Technology Incubator Grant
- 2014 Cory Family Teaching Award
- 2011 FEST Award & University Teaching Fellow
As Project Manager for the CMS MTD detector funded by DOE-HEP, he leads one of three global Assembly Centers in Charlottesville. He also chairs multiple departmental committees including Graduate Program and Financial Aid.
