Dr. Chris Moreh is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Sociology at Newcastle University's School of Geography, Politics and Sociology. Originally from Transylvania, he joined Newcastle University in November 2021 after serving as a Senior Lecturer at York St. John University. His academic work focuses on the political sociology of migration, citizenship, nationalism, and statistical methods, with an interdisciplinary approach that combines ethnographic observation, document analysis, survey methods and statistical modeling.
Dr. Moreh's educational background includes:
- PhD in Social Sciences from Northumbria University
- MA in Sociology and Social Anthropology from Central European University
- MA in Cultural Anthropology from Eötvös Loránd University of Budapest
Dr. Moreh's research interests center on migration studies, political sociology, and citizenship, with particular focus on transnational healthcare, EU migration, and the sociopolitical implications of Brexit. His approach is comparative, interdisciplinary, and multimethodological, combining ethnographic observation, document analysis, survey methods, and statistical modeling. He has conducted fieldwork in London (2013), Granada (2011), Alcalá de Henares (2008-2009), and Budapest (2006-2008).
His recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on migration patterns, particularly among Central and Eastern European populations in the UK, with increasing attention to transnational healthcare practices. His work often examines how migration strategies evolve in response to political changes, especially Brexit. Methodologically, his research combines qualitative depth with quantitative rigor, contributing to both theoretical understanding and practical policy implications in migration studies.
Dr. Moreh serves on the editorial boards of Sociology (2019-2023) and Central and Eastern European Migration Review (since 2018). He is currently leading the Trust Research Methods Database (TReMeDa) project funded by the British Academy/Leverhulme Trust (2024-2026), which focuses on research transparency and reproducibility.
As an educator, Dr. Moreh teaches research methods at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including SOC2069 "Researching Social Life 1" and SOC1031 "Knowing in Sociology" at the undergraduate level, and HSS8005 "Quantitative Analysis" at the postgraduate level. He is passionate about developing skills that facilitate open and credible research practices, serving as an Open Research Champion at Newcastle University.
Dr. Moreh is actively involved in several research collaborations, including projects on transnational healthcare among Polish migrants in the UK and the motivations and outcomes of study abroad experiences for UK students learning East Asian languages. His MAXOUT Study Abroad project represents a longitudinal investigation into the social mobility potentials of international exchange programs.
