Chris Mitchell serves as an experienced leader in UK higher education at the Royal College of Art, specializing in strategy development, curriculum design, and educational innovation. He currently holds a leading role in developing new academic frameworks, programs, and pedagogies at the College, including leadership of the MEd in Creative Education program. Previously, he served as Head of Academic Development and Learning and Teaching Coordinator at RCA, and before that as Manager of the Economics Subject Centre of the Higher Education Academy.
Mitchell's educational background includes an EdD from the UCL Institute of Education and an MA in Online and Distance Education from the Open University. His professional recognition includes Principal Fellowship with the Higher Education Academy, Fellowship with the Staff Educational Development Association (SEDA), and Fellowship with the Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching Through Design (CETLD).
Mitchell's research focuses on the design, delivery, and evaluation of education addressing social goals, particularly through challenge projects that bring people together to identify and address wicked problems. His work also encompasses elective offers and institute-wide professional development schemes designed to provide students with transferable skills necessary to translate intentions into action. His doctoral research examined the public role of UK higher education through the emergence of challenge projects in postgraduate and undergraduate education.
His publication portfolio demonstrates consistent contributions to educational theory and practice, with recent works exploring challenge-based learning, creative pedagogy, and the future of higher education.
