Chris McFarlane is a Professor and Department Chair in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of New Brunswick (UNB). His research focuses on accessory mineral petrogenesis, U-Pb geochronology, high-grade metamorphism, and impact crater dating. His work integrates advanced analytical techniques including laser ablation ICP-MS and microstructural analysis. He has supervised numerous graduate students, including Chris Zelt (MSc), Robin Adair (PhD), and Sarah Speight (PhD), with recent graduates focusing on topics like metamorphic timing and ore deposit geology.
His research leverages facilities like laser-ablation quadrupole ICP-MS systems and Zeiss Axiolmager microscopy. Key projects include dating terrestrial impacts (e.g., Steen River, Nicholson Lake) and developing methods for trace metal characterization in human keratin. Collaborations span institutions like SMU and the University of Alberta. His publications span disciplines from planetary geology to economic geology, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches.
Notable contributions include refining U-Pb dating methods for minerals like allanite and apatite, and linking geochemical signatures to ore genesis. His work frequently addresses crustal evolution, metamorphic processes, and the application of isotopic systems to tectonic problems.
