Chris Marx is a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Idaho, affiliated with the College of Science. His research focuses on microbial physiology, particularly Methylobacterium species, exploring their ecological and evolutionary dynamics under environmental stressors like formaldehyde and wildfire conditions. He holds a Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Washington and dual B.S. degrees in Biology and Environmental Engineering from MIT.
- Education:
- Ph.D. Microbiology, University of Washington (2003)
- B.S. Biology, MIT (1997)
- B.S. Environmental Engineering, MIT (1997)
Research interests include microbial phenotypic heterogeneity, metabolic pathway evolution, and the interplay between microbial communities and environmental changes. His work integrates experimental and computational approaches, exemplified by studies on formaldehyde tolerance mechanisms and the role of Methylobacterium in phyllosphere ecosystems.
Recent publications highlight advancements in methoxydotrophy, phylogenomic analysis of Methylobacterium diversity, and engineering applications of microbial systems. Marx leads the Marx-Udekwu Joint Lab, which investigates microbial adaptation and biotechnological applications, such as carotenoid production and antibiotic resistance mechanisms. His research bridges fundamental biology with applied challenges in environmental microbiology and biotechnology.
