Chris Marsden is a Professor of Artificial Intelligence, Technology and the Law at Monash University, directing the Digital Law Group. He serves on the ARC College of Experts (2024-26) and holds fellowships at Columbia University’s CITI and the International University of Japan’s GLOCOM. His research focuses on regulation by code, AI law, cyberlaw, and disinformation governance. He has authored 5 monographs, over 50 refereed articles, and contributed to major international research initiatives worth over $30 million. His work intersects law, technology, and policy, addressing global challenges in digital regulation.
Education: PhD in Law (University of Essex, 2011). Previous roles include Professorships at Sussex and Essex Law Schools, leadership in UKRI-funded consortia, and advisory roles for governments/IGOs since 1995.
Research Interests: Regulation by legal/software/social code, AI governance, platform accountability, net neutrality, and digital policy. His work bridges interdisciplinary gaps between law, computer science, and economics, emphasizing co-regulatory solutions and global norms.
