Chris Lorenz is the Head of the Department of Engineering at King's College London and holds the title of Professor of Computational Materials Science. He earned a BS/MS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan in 1997, followed by a PhD in 2001 under Prof. Robert Ziff, focusing on percolation theory applications. His career includes postdoctoral research at Sandia National Laboratories (2001–2005) and Iowa State University (2005–2007). He joined King's as a lecturer in 2007 and has since contributed to interdisciplinary research in biological physics, soft matter, and nanotechnology.
Research interests span molecular simulations of materials in biological systems, colloidal and interfacial phenomena, and antimicrobial peptide design. Key areas include lipid membrane dynamics, polymer self-assembly, and nanoparticle drug delivery. His work bridges disciplines, collaborating with Physics, Chemistry, and Biomedical Engineering.
Notable achievements include the National Physics Laboratory Rayleigh Award (2021) for antimicrobial resistance research and an EPSRC grant for coronavirus biosensor development. He leads King's initiatives in non-equilibrium science and cross-disciplinary training through CNES and CANES. His research groups focus on biofilms, nanotechnology applications, and sustainable materials.
Recent projects include insulin delivery optimization for diabetes management and structural insights into Alzheimer's disease mechanisms. He oversees King's Engineering's undergraduate programs and expands collaborations across King's and external institutions.
