Chris Knight is a part-time Senior Lecturer in Jewellery and Metalwork at the Department of Art and Design, Sheffield Hallam University. He has been teaching since 1993 and maintains dual roles as an independent silversmith and Director of Si Applied Ltd. His research explores the intersection of aesthetics and functionality in decorative objects, spanning domestic silverware, ecclesiastical silverware, and public art.
Education:
- Bachelor's degree from Sheffield City Polytechnic (1987)
- Master’s in Jewellery and Metalwork from the Royal College of Art (1992)
Research Interests: Knight’s work investigates how individuals interact with decorative objects, focusing on aesthetic expectations and functional language in crafted pieces. Recent projects use integrally cast graphic elements to provoke narrative commentary, blending traditional craft methods with critical reflection.

Teaching & Outreach: He advocates creative exploration through professional contexts, leading initiatives like the Crafts Council Hothouse program and securing sponsorships for students via the Sheffield Assay Office. His work is showcased in institutions such as the Victoria and Albert Museum and Musée des Arts Décoratifs.
Research Engagement: Active in masterclasses, guest lectures, and conferences, Knight collaborates with the Art Design and Media Research Centre and Culture and Creativity Research Institute at SHU, contributing to projects like 'Beneath the Skin' and 'Public Art and Architectural Metalwork.'
