Chris Kempes is a Professor and Chair of the Science Steering Committee at the Santa Fe Institute. His research bridges physics, biology, and earth sciences to uncover universal principles governing biological systems across scales—from genetic networks and microbial communities to plant traits and forest ecosystems. He develops mathematical frameworks connecting biological architecture to environmental constraints.
Research Focus: Kempes investigates how evolution optimizes biological structures (e.g., cellular morphology, metabolic networks) to mediate organism-environment interactions. Key areas include:
- Scaling laws for metabolic partitioning and size constraints in microorganisms
