Chris Hayes is an Associate Professor at the University of Southern Mississippi's Division of Marine Science within the School of Ocean Science and Engineering, located at the Stennis Space Center campus. His research focuses on chemical oceanography, paleoclimate, biogeochemistry, and the marine carbon cycle, utilizing geochemical proxies like uranium and thorium isotopes to study ocean processes.
Education: PhD (2013), PHM (2012), MA (2010) from Columbia University; BS (2008) from McGill University.
Research interests include aerosol dust deposition, ocean acidification, trace metal cycling, and paleoceanographic reconstructions. He participates in initiatives like GEOTRACES, studying trace elements and isotopes in ocean transects. His work spans the North Pacific, Southern Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean, with a focus on dust transport, circulation patterns, and phytoplankton productivity.
Publications emphasize thorium-based flux estimation, dust-climate interactions, and proxy validation. He teaches courses in isotope biogeochemistry, paleoceanography, and marine pollution. His lab, the Hayes Lab for Marine Geochemistry, is part of a network of oceanographic facilities along Mississippi's coast.
