Chris Foote

Chris Foote is a retired Professor and Fisheries Ecologist at Vancouver Island University whose research examined mechanisms of population differentiation and speciation in fishes. His work investigated the role of sexual selection in the genetic differentiation and possible sympatric speciation of sockeye salmon and kokanee through multidisciplinary approaches combining behavioral ecology, population genetics, physiology, and zoogeography.

Foote published extensively on salmonid biology, including studies of mating tactics, habitat disturbance effects, morphological variation, and ecological interactions between salmon morphs. His research combined field observations with genetic analyses to understand evolutionary processes in fish populations. Foote taught courses including Biology of Fishes, Lake and Stream Ecosystems, and Field Practicum in Fisheries.
