Dr. Chris Fisher is a Professor in the Department of Anthropology and Geography and Environmental Affairs at Colorado State University (College of Liberal Arts). His research focuses on landscape archaeology and human ecodynamics, particularly investigating the relationship between ancient societies and their environments. He leads projects in Mesoamerica, including the Malpaso Valley and Lake Patzcuaro Basin, utilizing LiDAR and GIS technologies to study urbanism, environmental change, and sustainability.
Education: Ph.D., University of Wisconsin (2000); M.A., University of Wisconsin (1994); B.A., Michigan State University (1992). He teaches courses on prehistory and Mesoamerican archaeology. Key research themes include land degradation, resilience, and the application of remote sensing to uncover ancient settlements and infrastructures. His work bridges archaeological inquiry with modern environmental challenges, emphasizing lessons from prehistoric human-environment interactions.
Dr. Fisher actively mentors graduate students in Mesoamerican archaeology, remote sensing, and geospatial analysis. His projects, such as the Legacies of Resilience initiative, integrate interdisciplinary approaches to understand long-term socio-ecological dynamics. Recent publications highlight LiDAR's role in revealing pre-Columbian urbanism, volcanic activity impacts, and cranial modification practices in Mesoamerica.
