معرفی
Chris Fink is a Professor of Physics at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. His academic career spans teaching and research in physics with a strong interdisciplinary focus on neuroscience. Dr. Fink teaches a wide range of courses across the physics curriculum, from introductory physics to advanced computational neuroscience.
Dr. Fink earned his educational degrees from prestigious institutions:
- Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Michigan
- M.S. in Physics from the University of Michigan
- M.S.E. in Electrical Engineering: Systems from the University of Michigan
- B.S. in Physics from Taylor University
As a biophysicist, Dr. Fink applies tools and ways of thinking from physics to better understand brain function. His research focuses on two main areas: the neuroscience of sleep and network theory applications to brain function. In sleep research, his lab develops computational models to understand how slow waves during deep sleep contribute to memory consolidation and metabolic waste clearance. In network theory, his lab investigates how to identify influential nodes in complex networks, with applications to understanding epilepsy and social media dynamics.
Dr. Fink's publication record demonstrates a consistent trajectory in computational neuroscience and biophysics, with recent work focusing on thalamocortical dynamics during sleep and network analysis techniques. His interdisciplinary approach bridges physics, neuroscience, and computer science, often involving undergraduate students in meaningful research projects. Many of his publications appear in high-impact journals including PLoS Computational Biology, Physical Review E, and Journal of Neuroscience.
Dr. Fink is deeply committed to undergraduate research mentorship. His lab has hosted numerous students who have gone on to graduate programs in neuroscience, physics, and engineering, as well as careers in technology and healthcare. He emphasizes project-based learning in his courses, believing that 'the pleasure of findings things out' is one of life's greatest joys.
Outside of his academic pursuits, Dr. Fink enjoys running, hiking, skiing, and traveling with his wife Chrissie. He maintains an active lifestyle, having completed a marathon with a personal best of 3:19:34, and enjoys learning new languages, including Chinese, which he studied during a gap year teaching in China after college.
