Professor Chris Elbers holds the Desmond Tutu Chair at the School of Business and Economics, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU). He is an Associate Professor at VU since 1994 and a Visiting Fellow at the School of Business and Economics. He is also an Economics Research Fellow and affiliated with the Tinbergen Institute and Amsterdam Institute for International Development (AIID). His research focuses on applied microeconomic analysis in developing countries, particularly Sub-Saharan Africa, with expertise in poverty measurement, impact evaluation, and big data methods.

Research Interests: Professor Elbers investigates economic development challenges, including micro and macroeconomic policies, poverty estimation techniques, and evaluating development interventions. His work emphasizes innovative methodologies like small-area estimation and panel data analysis. Recent studies address insurance mechanisms, inequality dynamics, and cost-effectiveness of social protection programs in Kenya.
