Chris Eberl is a Professor and Deputy Institute Director at the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials (IWM) and holds the Chair of Micromechanics and Mechanics of Materials at the University of Freiburg. He leads the 'Longevity' pillar of the livMatS cluster of excellence and co-chairs the Fraunhofer Cluster of Excellence Programmable Materials. His research focuses on deformation mechanisms in nano/microstructural materials, biomaterials, and the digitalization of materials science.
Education:
- Doctorate (2004) from the University of Stuttgart on 'Fatigue of Al thin films at ultra-high frequencies.'
- Studies in Materials Science at the University of Stuttgart (completed 2001).
Research Interests: Experimental characterization of material degradation, reliability evaluation, and novel measurement methods. He emphasizes sustainable applications of high-tech materials and digital tools for materials research, such as NFDI-MatWerk and MaterialDigital platforms.
Awards & Grants: Recipient of the Otto Hahn Medal (2006) and DFG funding (2007-2012). Supported by Fraunhofer's Attract Program since 2012. Completed the Executive Management Development Program (Fraunhofer) in 2022.
Leadership Roles: Board member of the German Association for Materials Research and Testing (DVM, 2024), Scientific Coordinator of Fraunhofer CPM, and spokesperson for NFDI-MatWerk.
